Signs of worn suspension or steering
Knocking or clunking over bumps, the car bouncing or floating after a hump, pulling to one side, a vibrating or off-centre steering wheel, uneven tyre wear, a heavy or vague feel to the steering, or a leaking shock absorber.
What we check
Shock absorbers and springs, control arm bushings, ball joints, anti-roll bar links, tie rod ends, the steering rack and its boots, and wheel bearings. On cars with air suspension we also check the air struts and compressor.
Many continental cars use a lot of rubber bushings that wear with age and heat. Replacing the right ones restores the car's ride without guessing.
After the repair
Steering and suspension work changes how the wheels sit, so a wheel alignment afterwards keeps the car driving straight and stops the tyres wearing unevenly.
Common questions
What causes a clunking noise over bumps?
Worn anti-roll bar links, control arm bushings, ball joints or shock absorber mounts are the usual causes. Lifting the car and checking each part finds the culprit.
How do I know my shock absorbers are worn?
The car keeps bouncing after a bump, dives under braking, leans more in corners, or a shock absorber is leaking oil. Uneven tyre wear can also be a sign.
Do I need a wheel alignment after suspension repair?
Usually yes. Replacing steering or suspension parts can change the wheel angles, and an alignment keeps the car straight and protects the tyres.
