Common aircon problems
Air that is cool but not cold, cold only when driving, warm air at idle, a musty smell from the vents, weak airflow, a clicking or grinding noise when the aircon is switched on, or water dripping inside the car.
How we check it
We check the system pressures and refrigerant level, look for leaks at the hoses, joints, condenser and evaporator, and test the compressor, its clutch or control valve, and the cooling fans. Refrigerant does not get used up; if the level is low, there is a leak, and topping up without fixing it only buys time.
Weak airflow and smells are often a clogged cabin filter or a dirty evaporator, which are simple to sort out.
Cabin and air filters
The cabin filter cleans the air you breathe inside the car, and the engine air filter protects the engine. Both clog faster in dusty, humid conditions. We replace them at your service intervals, or sooner if they need it.
Common questions
Why is my car aircon not cold?
The usual causes are a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor or compressor clutch, a cooling fan that is not running, or a blocked condenser. Testing the system pressures shows which.
Does car aircon gas need topping up regularly?
No. The system is sealed, so a low gas level means there is a leak somewhere. The leak should be found and fixed.
Why does my car aircon smell?
A musty smell usually comes from a dirty cabin filter or mould on the evaporator. Replacing the filter and cleaning the system usually cures it.
